I was never a fan of the Diablo series which has always irritated me, on paper it sounds like a game I’d love, between you and I I found it boring and repetitive. It was an action game with the controls of an RTS, which doesn’t go right in my mind, especially when it could quite easily be keyboard controlled. Maybe this is Blizzards style, I don’t know.
But with the recent hype around the long awaited sequel Diablo III my interest has perked up a bit. The game’s style and gameplay resemble (and I can already hear Blizzard fan boys weep) Blizzard’s most notable game World of Warcraft, and DIII even has the introduction of a ‘command belt’ which icons that also resemble those of WoW. However this isn’t a bad thing, although I do dislike Word of Warcraft I do like it’s visual style. Graphics are almost cartoon like, there are no steps to secure it’s “reality” in any sense, character designs are… ok CAN be good I have seen the Undead, I think that stands for its self.
So DIII looks like more of the same, a point-click adventure game set in some Hell torn part of a fantasy world, you kill enemies with a variety of techniques and weapons. Apparently they’ve added a new drop item, which heals you in the thick of a battle, which is pretty handy.
I’ve had a copy of Diablo II for a few years now and can never bring myself to play it for more than 5 minutes, this may be due to it’s now very dated graphics and limited animation. This is perhaps the reason DIII is appealing to me, the graphics seem crisp and well animated and the weapons even more so.
But let’s face it, what I say matters very little. Blizzard have built a name for themselves on the PC market, much in the way Square-Enix has on the console market. They can’t do any wrong, and if they do no-one will notice with the bawling fanboy chants drowning out even the most minute of a problem.
Diablo III isn’t a game I’m going to rush out to buy, I don’t think it’s worth the £20+ pricetag it will don, but maybe in a year or so when it becomes part of a 2 for £20 deal or I need to trade in a bunch of other games I might give it a whirl.
