Those of you unfortunate enough to catch Indiana Jones and The Kingdom of the Crystal Skull at the trailer may have already caught an earlier trailer for The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, but this new expanded and Hi-Definition trailer really gives you a sense of what David Fincher is trying to achieve. The film is an adaptation of the 1920s short story by F. Scott Fitzgerald and deals with a man who is born old and proceeds to live his life backwards.
Even more exciting than the concept is the director. David Fincher is probably one of the best current American directors, his work is always visually arresting and is often epoch making. As a director he’s responsible for some of the cultural touchstones of the 1990s (Seven and Fight Club both capturing the zeitgeist in their own peculiar way) and his last film (the absolutely wonderful) Zodiac showcased a director who had truly matured as a filmmaker.
Shot on digital like his previous film the trailer showcases yet another sublime visual offering from Fincher. Even though the choice of music is a little rote (it’s a piece called “The Aquarium” from the musical suite Carnival of Animals if you’re interested) the scenes depicted look absolutely incredible. Brad Pitt and Cate Blanchett feature heavily in the film as the eponymous Mr. Button and his love respectively and hopefully this will be the film that finally gets Pitt some recognition as a notable actor.
Despite being a massive comic book and foreign film geek, this is probably my most anticipated film of the year. It’s due out on general release in December, but it should be floating around some film festivals before then.
